Blowback

Around the country, elected officials of the GOP have really been socking it to public sector unions. In state after state, draconian legislation and regulations have been put into place. I'm sure these Republican leaders are banking on the belief that their actions will score political points with some sectors of the population, but there is always the fear of blowback.

While some unions traditionally are aligned with the Democratic Party, this often is not the case when it comes to the unions of police and firefighters. In Broward County (Florida), for example, the Broward County Police Benevolent Association (PBA) has supported the GOP for more than 2 decades. That looks to change next month.

The PBA is outraged at recent legislation passed by the Republican-controlled legislature that prohibits the government from collecting union dues for any union involved in political activity! It is rather obvious that this measure is a thinly-veiled attempt at union busting.

The PBA is so incensed that they sent the following invitation to their members.
The Broward PBA wants to send a message to the Republican Party, the governor and the Republican-led legislature -- those that are wreaking havoc on the lives of public employees -- that we will not sit idly by and take it. Supporting the GOP means supporting those that are working hard against your interests and those who believe that labor unions are bent on destroying America.

On July 16, we want you, our members, your friends and your family, to leave the Republican Party. Law enforcement, firefighters, teachers and other public employees are invited to join us in switching from the Republican party to the party of their choice. Those who are not registered voters are welcome to come register so their voices can also be heard. Registering or switching parties takes two minutes. All you need is a government-issued ID like a Florida Driver's License or a Florida ID.

There is one more legislative session before the 2012 elections -- let's put them on notice.
