A little less than 14 months ago, I wrote a post introducing readers to our new dog, Princess. Now, it looks like I may be writing a post about her very soon that reports her death. She hasn't been her usual self for the past month and we're awaiting results from blood tests. We fear we will be told she has leukemia.
We took her to the vet last week and the vet prescribed some prednisone. We were told that it should perk her up a bit, but her condition has continued to deteriorate. She is eating very little, her gums are almost as white as a sheet of paper (a very bad sign in dogs) and she can only stagger a few steps before collapsing in a heap.
She has that look in her eyes that I have seen many times before. It's that kind of pleading look: "Please, do something to make me feel better." We are trying to make things as comfortable for her as possible, but I don't think she is long for this world. (Della and I both hope we're wrong in our assessment, but, unfortunately, it doesn't look like we are.)
You know, pet-wise it's been a rough last 2 years for us. In that time, 3 dogs and 1 cat have died plus another cat disappeared. For a couple who decided not to have [human] children, it seems like each time we get over the heartache of losing one of our four-legged friends, another one bites the dust.
But that's the nature of this existence, isn't it? Whatever lives, eventually dies. While I can grasp this reality in a rational sense, it still doesn't make it any easier emotionally.
We certainly aren't looking forward to saying goodbye to our little Princess, but chances are we may not have a choice in the matter. I fear the time is very near. :'(
