Trickle Down

While most Americans whooped and hollered at the alleged death of Osama Bin Laden at the hands of Navy Seals, I fear many did not realize the danger of the trickle down effect. Episodes like this have a tendency to establish a precedent or blueprint for future actions by others across the US landscape.
On the morning of May 5, twenty-six year old Jose Guerena was wakened by his wife with word that there were men outside their Pima County (Arizona) home. The former Marine and veteran of two combat tours in Iraq was day sleeping after pulling a night shift for the Asarco Mission mine. He woke up fast, directed his wife to hide in a closet with their four year old son, grabbed an AR-15 rifle, and headed out to defend his family.

Iraq couldn't kill him. The mine job couldn't kill him. The hometown S.W.A.T. team that burst though his front door with no warning...that was another matter. Within moments, his lifeless body slumped face down on his own kitchen floor, riddled with -- get this -- sixty bullets.

His own rifle, the AR-15? The safety was still on...
Just like with the initial story of Bin Laden's demise, the decedent was said to have fired on deputies, only for authorities later to walk that assertion back several feet. Again, like with Bin Laden, very little information has been released and the local government is stonewalling the press and community.

You see, actions by our highest authorities often are mimicked at the local level. When then-President George Bush said a preemptive attack [on Iraq] both was legal and moral, it wasn't long before local police began to utilize preemptive arrests of peaceful protesters. They reasoned that it was okay to quell voices they didn't want to have to deal with.

In the case of Jose Guerena, we are now seeing the Bin Laden strategy at work. Manufacture a story to legitimize state action and then refuse to release ANY information to back up the claims. If the President can get away with it, why not a Sheriff's Department?

Sadly, with the precedent established, this won't be the last time we see this sort of episode play out in a local community!

Note: Thanks to RealityZone for bringing this story to my attention.
