From the Taoist perspective, we are who we are. A fool can keep the company of the wise and still be a fool. Likewise, a sage may choose to be a living example for fools and will still be wise.

It's all a matter of influence. If you are influenced by fools, you will be a fool. Better to be influenced by a sage.
