The End As We Know It

Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that tomorrow (May 21) is what Harold Camping has called the beginning of the end of times. God's chosen will be given heavenly bodies, while the rest of us struggle in the times of tribulation until the final ending on October 21.

Of course, most people in the world are laughing at Camping. Nothin's gonna happen tomorrow, they snort. There will be no worldwide earthquake and the dead will not walk out of their graves. Tomorrow will be a typical Saturday and it will be followed by a routine Sunday.

As you all know by now, I am not a religious fellow. However, it may surprise you that I think Camping's thesis is correct...just not in the way he understands it.

Tomorrow indeed will be the beginning of the end for everybody in the world. Those alive will be one step closer to death. The same is true for today, Sunday and a random Thursday a few months hence.

Every living being eventually dies, so each day that we live can be viewed as a new beginning of the march toward death.

Tomorrow some people will learn that they have an incurable disease and, as luck may have it, their last day on earth will be October 21. For them, Camping's prediction will be as true as it gets. In fact, every person who dies between May 21 - October 21 could say that Camping was right on the money.
