Back and Forth

In terms of our sick little doggy, our opinion of the situation keeps moving back and forth. On Wednesday, we thought we would have her euthanized no later than today because she wasn't showing much of any signs that the prednisone was having any beneficial effect. However, on Thursday afternoon, we saw the first signs that, maybe, the drug was having a somewhat positive impact.

As of yesterday, the color has come back into her nose. For the past 2 weeks or so, her little nose had switched from a brownish red to a cream color. But yesterday morning, I noticed that her nose was brownish and by late evening, some of the red has come back too.

She has started to eat more. She certainly hasn't returned to her general piggish nature, but she did eat nearly one-half of a can of dog food plus two pieces of cheese and a doggy treat. In the overall scheme of things, that still is not a lot of food, but it is more than she had consumed in the previous three or four days combined.

Her energy level remains very low and she sleeps a good deal of each day. Her gums are still looking very unhealthy -- almost stark white. Yet, I have carried her outside twice and she went the bathroom in the yard (not on the carpet).

So, all in all, we are cautiously optimistic. She has moments when we think she might fight her way through this and then there are other moments in which we think she won't. At this point, we're keeping our fingers crossed that she will continue slowly to regain some of her energy.

  1. This sounds like an episode from "Doghouse, M.D." Sometimes medications can be miracles. I hope she pulls through.
