The Simple Way, Part 41

The Simple Way
The Life & Teachings of Zhouzi
by Scott Bradley

Chui, a logician of some local fame, asked Zhouzi, “Tell me, Sir, is it wrong to believe in right and wrong?”

“How could it be wrong if there is not such thing?” replied Zhouzi.

“Then is it right to believe in what does not exist?”

“How can it be right if there is no such thing?” answered the Master. “That men have fettered themselves with a right and a wrong is an expression of humanity as it now is; only I say there is a happier way. Yet fettered or free, striving or at peace, all is equally an expression of Reality. Still, to the valuation you wish to expose, I will gladly admit — we value peace and freedom and harmony, though they are themselves their only reward. Fulfillment arises beyond the contrivances of men.”
