The Simple Way
The Life & Teachings of Zhouzi

A monk, whom Zhouzi had assigned to clean the privies as a disciplinary measure for his addiction to right and wrong, came and petitioned him for a change of duties. “For Master,” said he, “I have learned my lesson and see there is no point in punishing myself with guilt and recrimination.”

“So the punishment for punishing yourself has been a perfect success!” exclaimed Zhouzi. “Who then would you have take your place?”

“Master,” replied the monk, “I cannot presume to name another.”

“No matter,” replied Zhouzi. “You may return to your duties in the garden, for I have someone in mind.”

The following day Zhouzi began to clean the privies.

  1. He could have done one of several philosophical wriggles in that story but he went straight for the funny. Very good laugh there.
