Quick Thaw

Here on the southwest Washington coast, we experience a rather interesting weather phenomena that is not typical in other parts of the country. It tends to happen two or three times each winter.

Yesterday afternoon around 3:00 p.m., it began to snow. Showing no regard for the forecast -- which indicated next to no accumulation -- it snowed rather steadily until nearly 10:00 p.m. By the time the white stuff stopped falling, we had 2 - 3 inches on the ground. The neighborhood children had great fun in the snow all evening long.

I'm sure some of the kids had visions of sugar plums and NO SCHOOL dancing about in their heads. Alas, they are in school today because, by the time they awakened early this morning, almost every speck of snow was gone! In fact, the big melt started shortly before midnight.

You see, while the temperature was hovering around 28 degrees at 7:00 p.m., it had risen through the night to 44 degrees as of 3:30 a.m. (when I headed off to bed).

Their Winter Wonderland turned to mush (sniff, sniff) in a scant few darkened hours!

  1. We'd always get a good January thaw back in Michigan. And rarely enough snow to miss school. A mere 3 inches there is laughable, takes a foot or so.
