As I reported yesterday morning, the South Bend High School football team played last night for the state 2B football championship. They squared off against the number one ranked Colfax Bulldogs. In a first for our local high school, they won the game 28 - 8. The South Bend Indians are state champs!!!
People around town are walking on air. As one gentleman remarked, "This is the best thing to happen to South Bend in a long, long time." Even though I've never attended one of their games (crowds, ya know), I've got a big goofy grin on my face. Yes, football isn't the end-all, be-all of life, but having our little school be crowned state champs ain't too bad either.
When the season began in September, few people thought South Bend would do well. Two of our best players -- including our star quarterback -- moved out of county and so a running back (who is only a so-so passer) had to take over as quarterback at the last minute. The team came in second in its league, nonetheless. Just before the playoffs started, the team then lost it's top running back/kick returner to a knee injury.
Yet, for all the adversity, the players for this small school pulled together and marched their way through the playoffs by defeating the #1 (Colfax), #2 (Napavine) and #4 (Orcas Island) ranked teams. Colfax and Napavine were undefeated...before they ran into the South Bend Indians.
Way to go Tribe!!!
