Lao Tzu reminds us that,
A good winner is not vengeful.Vengeance creates resentment and a desire for retaliation from the defeated side. It builds a wall of separation that can exist for hundreds or thousands of years. It is a barrier to the harmony of all which is the embodiment of Tao.
