A Few Meager Yards

All night long, we were buffeted by near gale force winds. This means nothing significant -- in and of itself -- because autumn and winter storms are par for the course along the northwest Pacific coast. What I find interesting is the difference a very short distance makes. You see, the winds up here on our hill are fierce; the wind two blocks down (at the bottom of our hill) is much less jarring. Travel another block or two and there almost is no wind to speak of.

It just goes to show that circumstances change, often in very close proximity. This is as true for topography and weather as it is for almost any other aspect of life.

For me, that's why it's so important to remain focused. It's when we aren't paying close attention that the topography of our lives changes and, because we don't notice the change, we often are slammed by circumstances that we think are out of character for the situation. It is only when we become cognizant that we're now situated in a different landscape that we realize that our inattention, more than anything else, is what did us in!
