The Tao of Dark Sages
by Scott Bradley
by Scott Bradley
One night, after having our sages to dinner, we all sat on the roof of our cottage (it being flat, as is the custom here) and watched the stars.
Gabi: Do you think this is all a dream, that all this great big universe and all of us are just the thoughts of a Cosmic Awareness?
Scott-tzu: Most definitely. And when we wake up we are that Awareness. Only for this to happen we must purify ourselves through mortification of the flesh; otherwise we will dwell forever in a dream state and become wretched wraiths of unbeing.
Sue-tzu: You, at any rate, most definitely are a figment of my imagination — don’t you remember, Scott-tzu?
Scott-tzu: Ha! The joke’s on you, Sue-tzu; I’ve made you all up.
Mark-tzu: Yes, you have — and yourself as well.
Gabi: Vous etes tous fou!
Scott-tzu: “We’re all crazy.”
Sue-tzu: Yes. Isn’t it wonderful!
(Quiet. Oohs and aahs at shooting stars.)
