Blinded By the Light

Most people here on the southwest Washington Coast have developed an odd sense of humor. Since November - mid-March the sun is rarely seen, we all feign credulity anytime the golden orb graces the sky. "What's that big light up there?" people are prone to ask.

As I arose this morning, the giant headlight was high in the sky, but it only indirectly blinded my sight. No, what really dazzled my eyes was 2 - 3 inches of powder snow!!

While snow is not considered much of an anomaly in late fall in most of the country, it is an oddity here, for sure. It's not atypical in the least for us to go through an entire winter without as much as a few flurries here and there. Yet today, we find ourselves enjoying a "winter wonderland," replete with snow and temps in the low 20s. Our projected high this day is not expected to make to the freezing level!

The neighborhood children, of course, are overjoyed because school has been canceled. Their joy will be short-lived as tomorrow the temperature should rise to about 38 and to the mid-forties by Friday.

For this day, however, the North Pole has come to South Bend. :-)

  1. lol to the school being cancelled. :) in wisconsin/minnesota it takes a bad blizzard to cancel school... only if the roads are truly impassible. we've had snow on the ground for nearly 2 weeks now.

  2. We had pretty cloudy winters in Michigan, where I'm from originally. A friend of mine, who was kind of nocturnal to boot, used to call the sun "scare ball" which I always found funny.
