Sometimes the most powerful thing a leader can do is nothing. Wu wei -- inaction -- can be an important tool too. Michael Herzog, the chair of the English department at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, told me how important he's found what he calls "a period of judicious waiting on some issues. There are times when I shouldn't make a decision yet because I really cannot make it." A Tao leader doesn't let impatience overrule judgment. He or she knows when to take action and when to wait.
