Word Game Hell

One of my favorite computer activities -- when I'm not reading or writing blog posts -- is to play word games. Back when I was running Windows, I would spend hours playing Scrabble, Boggle, Lexicon and Supper Letter Linker. While I'm really getting to the point in which I like my new Linux system -- it is so much faster than any Windows system I've ever used -- my one big complaint is that none of the aforementioned software programs will work in Linux AND there seems to be a dearth of Linux-based word games.

I have WINE installed (WINE supposedly allows a Linux-based operating system to run many Windows programs), but I've had very little luck in getting any Windows programs to run on this machine.

The dearth of word games puzzles me to no end. In the early days, Linux basically was a command line system. Instead of utilizing the graphical user interface made popular by Microsoft and Apple, Linux users entered their commands with words and abbreviations. So, in a manner of speaking, the origins of Linux are word-based and yet few of the Linux games are about words!

When I scan the package manager (programs, scripts and the like that can be downloaded), I find lots of shoot 'em up and kill the invader games. There are scads of block games, puzzles and card games. Just no word games.

Wahhhhhh!! ;-(

  1. I'm not sure exactly what system you have running so not able to suggest an exact response but many simple games come under the 'gnome-games' package.

What I'd do for now though, and you've surely tried, is to play these games on-line.. no luck there?

  3. Wow on Debian now, and KDE!

Well Debian have a lot of software available, but you're right, word games are hard to find.

I will write back if I find any, for now I can only suggest again to find on-line versions of games you play in web pages.
