Jack Frost

One of the reasons Della and I love the southwest Washington Coast so is the temperate climate. For the most part, it doesn't get too hot nor too cold and it rarely snows. Of course, just because the temperatures here tend to stay in the moderate range, this does not mean that we do not experience extremes from time to time.

Last month we received nearly twice as much rain as normal -- a really yang weather month. Thus far, December has been a yin month. Almost no rain whatsoever and, for the past two days, bone-chilling temperatures. For example, the average high temperature for this date is 46 degrees, but our high today never made the freezing mark. The thermometer struggled to reach 29 degrees!

Right now, it's 18 degrees and the low tonight may dip into the single digits. Brrrrrrrrrrr. I'm fairly sure it won't break our recorded low temperature record of 3 degrees, but it could land in the ballpark.

I do realize that for those of you who live up north, the fact that our area has never recorded a below zero temp may cause you to let out a big guffaw. Just remember that context is everything and, in this context, 18 degrees and falling is DAMN COLD. :>)

  1. How about a big guffaw from much further south. We don't get them as often anymore, but it's not uncommon for our temps here in NC to dip below the zero mark a few times each year.
