A Question for You

As I travel around the blogosphere, I've noticed that more and more blogs utilize comment moderation. While I respect each blog author's right to moderate comments left, I must be honest to say that I don't understand it UNLESS you've been a victim of incessant spamming. Under that one circumstance, I can understand why you might wish to cull out the consistent junk.

Are there other reasons so many people moderate the comments section? If so, I'd like to hear them.

For myself, since I value a free flow of opinion, I have never turned comment moderation on and I don't plan to. In the 4+ years this blog has been on the web, I've only deleted one or two comments in total because of one person bodily threatening another. Short of making a direct physical threat, you can say almost anything here your little heart desires.

I reason that they're your words and thoughts, not mine.

  2. Donna,
I always look forward to your comments and I thank you for putting it so succinctly. :D)

  3. A good question: I have noticed the same thing. And have never turned moderation on either.
You do get a few unsavoury comments, but in the world we live in: that's the least of it.
The Master offers his whole heart, knowing it may be mishandled. When it is, he deals with it, repairs the damage, and offers it again. And again. And again...

  4. In addition:
Trying to be in control of everything is a very human failing.
Being out of control terrifies most of us. That is why so very few of us can:
    "Leap boldly into the void...
    You will not be harmed,
    it has no bottom".

  5. I do it on my blog simply because I have been repeatedly attacked by spam. Unless I want my comments section to end up being advertising for viagra, Russian motorcycles, and God only knows what else, I have to do it.

  6. Yes, I do get hammered with spam from time to time.

But the the more important reason is something akin to what Donna wrote.

RT, I don't have the stomach for, or patience with "trolls" that I have seen you have. And it's worse than that. I've been so viciously attacked on a couple of my blogs by rabid comment trolls that I've actually shut blogs down I was being hounded so much. I am not a fighter. It's not worth it. That's not why I do blogging, though I know some do it for the love of debate. "Free flow of ideas" is one thing and you know from the discussions on my own blog that I love respectful and thoughtful discussion. Sopmetimes that can be in short supply in the blogosphere. I guard that on my blog because that's the kind of place I want my blog to be, a respectful place. So no, my blog is not "free speach" for any and every ignorant pea-brained asshole that wants to comment. They are'nt welcome. And it's MY blog, so....

Finally, I have been stalked...in real life, but folks who found my blog. It's scary shit. So forgive me if I am a little extra cautious and maybe even a little paranoid. My experience in all these areas gives me reason to be as far as I am concerned.

  7. Owl & Forest,
As I stated in my post, the reasons you both provide certainly are legitimate and I have no qualms with your decisions in this regard.

And as a special note to you FW, I do love a good debate. :D) I grew up in the home of a defense lawyer, so debating is second nature to me, though I AM trying to learn to debate in less acidic ways.

Comments are unmoderated, so you can write whatever you want.
