For years, if someone brings up the idea of universal health care, opponents say it would never work in the the 'ol US of A. Yet, as it turns out, this isn't true at all. The US does IN FACT have a universal health care system for one segment of the population -- the VA system for our military.
Not only do we have such a system, but, according to Phillip Longman in an article in Washington Monthly, it's proven to be very successful.
