CLASSic Hyperbole

Conservatives seem to be in a bit of a quandary in relation to how they view the topic of working women and the so-called disintegration of the traditional family (‘family values”). In one instance, they run around screaming that women have a moral responsibility to enter the workforce. Yet, and here’s the amusing part, they concurrently badmouth working women and blame them for many of society’s ills.

So, who do conservatives think should be working? Of course, the answer is “welfare” mothers. From their skewed viewpoint, women on welfare have chosen to lead a life of leisure subsidized by the rest of us. Instead of bringing home the bacon, these women supposedly wait at home for the “public” pig to arrive on their doorstep.

It would seem then that conservatives embrace the notion of the working woman.

Not so fast. While conservatives lambaste impoverished women for not holding down one or more minimum wage jobs, they blame middle and upper class women for putting career before family. This, according to conservatives, is one of the chief reasons for the disintegration of "family values"– absent mothers (little complaint though re absent fathers). They urge women in the upper strata to stay home to provide home and hearth for their needy children and husband.

What can explain this apparent contradiction? There’s only one rational explanation – CLASS!

Yes, the poor need to work to serve the rich. “Rich” women don’t NEED to work, so they shouldn’t. Underneath all their self-righteous rhetoric, this is the simple message.

Kind of sickening, isn’t it?
