Zhouzi was hoeing weeds in the garden when he shouted to a disciple a few rows away, “Tell me, Xiu, what do you get when you open your heart?”

Xiu answered without reflection, “Master, everything and nothing!”

“An excellent answer, Xiu — if you know what it means!” replied the Master.

After awhile Xiu summoned the courage to ask, “Master, might I venture to ask what answer you would give?”

“An open heart!” replied Zhouzi and laughed so hard he had to support himself with the hoe.
