Past, Future, Present

If there were no memory there would be no Past. If there were no desire or fear there would be no Future. The Present, renewed every instant, alone would remain, and it would be eternity for there would be no Time.

When I read the above paragraph, the words leapt out at me from the page! It seems that our emotions define the parameters of how we interpret the world around us. This helps to explain for me Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu's incessant calls to cling to the middle. When we are able to keep our emotions in check -- balanced away from extremes -- we are more able to live in the now and the present moment then becomes timeless.

What say you?

  1. In Spanish we have a saying that goes, "The higher you fly, the more painful your fall will be."

It takes a lot of maturity to understand, in the heat of the moment, that nothing is 100% good or bad, and that there is usually more beyond what we can currently see, and we should, therefore, not be too happy or too sad.

  2. I've been thinking about this for hours...maybe Alzheimer's isn't the terrible tragedy we think it is.
