Today is celebrated (if that's the right word) by Christians the world over as the day Jesus of Nazareth was resurrected. It should be a day in which the millions of adherents flock to churches to sing hymns that praise God. While this element is certainly evident for many Christians, the overriding theme of this day has something to do with a rabbit and colored eggs!
If we think about it, the two biggest days in Christendom are each signified by a strange marriage between paganism and religion. The symbols for each -- the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus -- have lost almost all vestiges of religious meaning. Jesus, the onus behind both holidays, is like a neglected step-child.
In addition, both of these mythic characters work quite nicely in a capitalist system in which the "good" are rewarded with more goodies. So you better be good for goodness sakes!
