Send God Packing

Here's a snippet from an excellent article from Intervention Magazine on the evils of the various Gods.
Religious fanaticism in all its forms leads inevitably to bigotry, hatred, and, too often, violent confrontations. Let's end it like reasonable human beings. How many more Crusades, Jihads, Holy Wars, whatever you want to call them, must we live through to see the light? Let's put belief in a personal God, who tells us that only we are right and that everybody else is wrong, on a dusty top shelf, out of reach, where it belongs.
I realize many of the religious will argue that there's nothing wrong with God -- it's how some people interpret him/her/it. Frankly, it doesn't matter whose fault it is. Religion spawns fanaticism and fundamentalism. There's no escaping this.

Therefore, if we jettison the concept altogether, we certainly wouldn't be any worse off than we are today.

  1. I've been advocating this for years, ever since I refused to be baptised at the age of 13 into the Baptist church. If there is a Hell, they made it for themselves.

  2. "You may remember the story of how the devil and a friend of his were walking down the street, when they saw ahead of them a man stoop down and pick up something from the ground, look at it, and put it away in his pocket. The friend said to the devil, "What did that man pick up?" "He picked up a piece of the truth," said the devil. "That is a very bad business for you, then," said his friend. "Oh, not at all," the devil replied, "I am going to help him organize it."" -Krishnamurti

  3. You're certainly right on this one. It would be ironically easy to make a good moral argument against religion. I would argue that more people have died for and at the hands of religious beliefs than anything, ever.

  4. You seem to have a great fear of God - too funny. You fear something that you claim does not exist!

  5. To Anonymous --

Our fear is not of a god, but of the mob mentality of the fanatics that are found in organized religion.

  6. Hi Justadog, haven't seen you in a couple of weeks

    *snickering into hand* :-)

Maybe he took me literally...and let it all go!

Be one with the universe, my son!

I shouldn't make fun, though...it's an arrogance I should eschew

  7. I'd just like to see these people actually follow their religion. Every single true religion has at its core the commandment to not kill or harm others, if that were followed then I would have no problem with any god's followers.

I guess hypocrisy has no end in religion.

  8. Religion started out as a way to control the growing populations in the already overcrowded cities. That was 2000 years ago.
I mean, the reason why Jews and Muslims aren't allowed to eat pigs is simply because their natural environment didn't allow them to grow these animals. But now, they all act like it's some form of devil-worship...
But hey, we've had our Inquistion, who are we to talk out loud.

:) or maybe it is the fanatics and fundementalist extremeist who use God as an excuse to commit horrendous acts on their fellow man?

whenever i read things like this i tend to feel the taoist concept of letitng go and moving on has alot to recomend it, maybe if we as a species where able to let go of the need for God, and the need to be right about what God is or what God said, then we as a people wouldn;t use God as our excuse to kill maim hurt and ultimatly destroy each other.

    just a thought

  10. Love the Krishnamurti quote. So true. Trying to organize the truth (as in organized religion) corrupts the truth.
