Believe Your Own Eyes

As with all things political, the spin doctors are out in force. Bush and his merry men are trying to tell the public that the rescue effort in the Gulf region wasn't as bad as we might like to think. But there's a giant bug in the ointment! Our own eyes.

Unlike Iraq and its embedded reporters, the national media descended unfettered upon New Orleans and Mississippi. Within hours after Hurricane Katrina's landfall, reporters were there to provide round-the-clock observations and pictures. In fact, in the beginning of the aftermath, it looked like the media outnumbered the rescuers!

This onslaught of media attention shone a steady light on the unfolding tragedy. Regardless of what the administration is trying to get us to believe, we know it's not true. We saw the people in misery. We heard their stories. We watched as the police stood by while people looted (though, personally, I don't think that's an indictment of the police). We watched as people waited for a rescue that didn't come for days. We saw the bloated bodies floating in the water!

What is far worse for the Bush administration concerns the direction the criticism is coming from. It's not just the liberal media. It's coming from the left AND the right. Several republicans have decried the slowness of response and the overall lack of coordination. Even the very conservative publication BusinessWeek has written a scathing editorial!

So let the spin doctors try to spin their web of lies. This is one time I don't think the American public will buy their snake oil. This time we know different. This time there were MILLIONS of eyewitnesses.

Believe your own eyes.

  1. About Cindy Sheehan

What is most interesting to me is that the press gives Cindy and the little bunch of people who are protesting with her, so much air time without discussing Cindy's background. This is a case of more press bias. It has been pointed out on only a couple of media outlets that Cindy divorced her first husband and left her son, Casey, with him to be raised while she became a political activist for the Democratic Party. She had very little to do with Casey in his growing years. She remarried and her first husband remarried. Her first husband--Casey's father--with his new wife, raised Casey. They miss their son and mourn the loss of his life. They have stated that they are very proud of him and that they agree with the stance of America in Iraq and on terror. They said that their son was eager to serve and to go fight the terrorists in Iraq. He volunteered.

How many news stations carried their interview? Not many. So the son dies in Iraq and then Cindy shows up to make a stink. She gets an audience with Bush. But that was not enough. She goes to Crawford and demands another audience. How many news stations carry the ongoing saga of Cindy? Practically all of them. Cindy didn't care about her son. She let another woman raise him. Cindy doesn't care about the other soldiers in Iraq. Cindy cares about her liberal, feminist agenda and about using the death of her son to lobby against Republicans and Bush. And the press is helping her. Why?

Then a few days ago, Cindy's second husband filed for a divorce from her. Cindy sounds like a feminist opportunist who did not have the sense of responsibility to even raise her own son. It looks like her second husband is fed up with her too. We middle Americans should be fed up with Cindy also.
But mostly we should be fed up with the press. They manipulate us into their "group think" and into the responses that they want on their polls. It is very fashionable among their ilk to hate George W. Bush and to do anything they can to bash him.
