Politicians are a strange group. They can give speeches, interviews, press conferences and the like repeating the same statement over and over again. Anyone who is paying half attention knows what the politician is saying. Yet, when circumstances change -- even slightly -- that same politician can sing a different tune, yet try to convince everyone that the new tune is no different than the old tune!
Take, for example, President Obama. For the last year he made it very clear that he was against extending the Bush tax cuts for the filthy rich. While he wanted to keep the middle class tax cut, he was very unequivocal about his opposition to the tax cut that played a huge role in this country's economic downturn.
With the GOP takeover of the US House on Election Day, the president is now singing a different tune. Now he says he is against a permanent extension, but is open to a temporary one. He and his minions are appearing all over the place to state that his policy hasn't changed at all. Unfortunately, in this era of 24/7 news and YouTube, it is very easy to show that it's a big lie.
As with so many other issues over the past two years, Obama has waffled and flip-flopped. This issue is little different from so many others. The President initially takes a hard stand, then, in short order, begins walking away from his stated principle. When push comes to shove, he caves in and each cave-in ends up hurting the overall economy.
The worst of it is that this IS the primary reason his party lost so much ground on Election Day. If he had grown a backbone, the election result might have been altogether different.
