To fully live in this life, we must each be well-rounded. If you committed yourself to being the best possible partner to your spouse, but you concurrently were a horrible parent to your children, what good would that do you or anyone else?
It's not enough to be kind to those who are kind to you or to show respect to those who respect you. To follow the Way means to be kind, respectful, just, and compassionate to all. It also means to have the willingness to adjust to changing circumstances; something that I have a great deal of trouble with owing to my neurological nature!

That's one of my goals this year, to learn to be more compassionate and empathetic to other people, or maybe that would be re-learn, since I think as children we are all born with a great capacity for both. Unfortunately such tendencies get "socialized" out of most people long before we reach maturity.
