While scrubbing the muck in the shower, another rather strange thought crossed my mind: If a person is a biblical literalist, where do viruses and bacteria come from? The first chapter of Genesis lists all sorts of creatures being made, but I don't remember ANY mention of one-celled microorganisms.
Of course, during the time of the oral tradition, no one knew anything about germ theory. Even as late as the penning of the books in the New Testament, people became sick because a) they had displeased the Lord and/or b) they were serving as the unwitting host for unclean or evil spirits. Back then, when a person became deathly ill, you didn't call the doctor but the exorcist!
Maybe these are creations of the devil himself! Unfortunately, such an idea isn't mentioned anywhere in the Bible. In fact, utilizing online concordances, I couldn't find any mention of the words germ, virus or bacteria anywhere in any version of the Bible.
So, where did they come from and who created them?

Gen 1:20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
ReplyDeleteIt could be argued that germs and bacteria were moving creatures, and that they lived in the sea at one time.
But you're right, there's no specific mention of microbes anywhere in the bible.
No dinosaurs in the Bible, either -- not that I've been able to find anyway.
ReplyDeleteBacteria and viruses are a Satanic plot to seduce the Heathens. Same with those phony "fossils" that atheists are always crowing about.
ReplyDeleteGod created the Earth 5,000 years ago (or was it 6,000?) and He didn't create no steenking germs and viruses. Case closed.
